MAKE COACHING CHANGE -- IN SPRINGFIELD
February 10, 2009 The Oilers have made a coaching change with their American Hockey League affiliate, firing Springfield Falcons head coach Jeff Truitt and replacing him with Rob Daum. Truitt compiled a 16-27-7 record, which had the Falcons ranked as the second-worst team in the 29-team league. This was Truitt's first season as head coach with the Falcons after taking over from Kelly Buchberger this summer. Daum, a pro scout with the
Oilers, has previous AHL coaching experience with the Houston Aeros, where
he registered a 77-67-16 record in two seasons with the Minnesota farm
team. Daum was an assistant coach with Edmonton last season before
being replaced by Buchberger.
HEMSKY NAMED NHL THIRD STAR January 26, 2009 Oilers right winger Ales
Hemsky has been named the NHL’s Third Star for the week ending
January 25. Hemsky had two goals and two assists in a game against
Columbus on Jan. 20, including the game-winning goal with 34.9 seconds
to go.
Oilers centre Andrew
Cogliano has won the NHL Fastest Skater Competition, which was
held during the All Star Weekend in Montreal. Cogliano's circled
the rink in 14.31 to take top spot in the competition.
Oilers honour Glenn Anderson by retiring his #9 jersey prior to a game versus the Phoenix Coyotes. Anderson becomes the seventh Oiler to have his jersey retired by the team, joining Al Hamilton, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey and Mark Messier. Anderson scored 417-489-906 with 798 PIM in 845 games with the Oilers over 12 seasons, and finished his NHL career with 498-601-1129 with 1120 PIM. Anderson won a total of six Stanley Cups, five with Edmonton and one with the New York Rangers. Anderson ranks near the top of many Oilers team records, including games played (third), goals (fourth), assists (fourth), hat tricks (second with 20), powerplay goals (first with 126), game winning goals (first with 73) and multiple point games (fourth with 240). He was also clutch during the playoffs and ranks near the top of the NHL's all-time post-season career leaders in goals (fifth), assists (seventh), overtime goals (third with five) and game winning goals (sixth with 17).
