OILERS OFF TO BEST START IN 23 YEARS
October 20, 2008

The Oilers 4-0 record is the team's best start in 23 years.  Edmonton started the 1985-86 season at 5-0-0.  The Oilers' best-ever start to a season was back in 1983-84, when they started at 7-0-0.


SOURAY NAMED ASSISTANT CAPTAIN

Oilers name defenceman Sheldon Souray as an assistant captain for the 2008-09 season. 

Souray will wear the 'A' on road games along with Steve Staios, while Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky will be assistants for home games.  Ethan Moreau remains the team captain.

OILERS UNVEIL 'NEW' THIRD JERSEY

Oilers unveil their new retro third-jersey (pictured above), and announce the dates that the team will be wearing it.  The vintage jersey incorporates the Oilers vintage blue and orange colours with the new RBK design.  It will be worn for the following games:

OILERS TO RETIRE GLENN ANDERSON'S #9

Oilers announce that the team will honour Glenn Anderson by retiring his #9 jersey prior to a game versus the Phoenix Coyotes at Rexall Place on Jan. 18, 2009.  Anderson will become the seventh Oiler to have his jersey retired by the team, joining Al Hamilton, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey and Mark Messier. 

Anderson scored 417-489-906 with 798 PIM in 845 games with the Oilers over 12 seasons, and finished his NHL career with 498-601-1129 with 1120 PIM.  Anderson won a total of six Stanley Cups, five with Edmonton and one with the New York Rangers. 

Anderson ranks near the top of many Oilers team records, including games played (third), goals (fourth), assists (fourth), hat tricks (second with 20), powerplay goals (first with 126), game winning goals (first with 73) and multiple point games (fourth with 240).  He was also clutch during the playoffs and ranks near the top of the NHL's all-time post-season career leaders in goals (fifth), assists (seventh), overtime goals (third with five) and game winning goals (sixth with 17).


OILERS ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF ROOKIE TOURNAMENT

Oilers announce details of the “Oil Country Rookie Tournament” that will feature games between the top prospects from the Oilers, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks.   The tournament will be held between Sept. 13 and 16 in Camrose, and will also feature games in Edmonton involving the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
