AUGUST, 2007
Date Transaction
Aug. 8: Oilers re-sign centre Kyle Brodziak and defenceman Mathieu Roy to two-year contracts, and ink left winger Geoff Paukovich to a three-year entry level deal.

Brodziak, the Oilers' seventh round pick (214th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, was the second leading scorer with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL last season with 24-32-56 and 44 PIM in 62 games.  He added 0-1-1 with 2 PIM in 6 games with the Oilers.

Roy, who was also selected in the seventh round (215th overall) in 2003, scored 6-12-18 with 40 PIM in 31 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last year, and added 2-0-2 with 30 PIM in 16 games with Edmonton.

Paukovich, the Oilers second round pick (57th overall) in 2004, scored 8-9-17 with 65 PIM in 39 games with the University of Denver of the NCAA last season.

Aug. 2:
Penner
The Anaheim Ducks elect not to match the offer sheet that the Oilers made to restricted free agent left winger Dustin Penner.  The Oilers will now compensate the Ducks by giving up their first, second and third round selections in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.  The Oilers still have an additional first round pick next year, which ironically was acquired from Anaheim in the Chris Pronger trade.

Penner, who will earn $4.25 million in each of the next 5 seasons with Edmonton, scored 29-16-45 with 58 PIM in 82 games with Anaheim last year, and added 3-5-8 with 2 PIM in 21 playoff games.

JULY, 2007
Date Transaction
July 26: Oilers sign Anaheim left winger Dustin Penner to a five-year, $21.25 million offer sheet.  Anaheim now has seven days to match the offer.  Penner, 24, scored 29-16-45 with 58 PIM in 82 games with Anaheim last year, and added 3-5-8 with 2 PIM in 21 playoff games.  In 101 NHL games, he has scored 33-19-52 with 72 PIM.
July 20: Oilers re-sign defenceman Joni Pitkanen to a one-year. $2.4 million contract, avoiding a salary arbitration hearing that had been scheduled while he was a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.  Pitkanen scored 4-39-43 with 88 PIM in 77 games with the Flyers last season.
July 17: Oilers sign right winger Colin McDonald to a two-year entry level contract and agree to one-year deals with left winger Ryan Flinn and defencemen T.J. Kemp and T.J. Reynolds.

McDonald, the Oilers' second round pick (51st overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, scored 13-4-17 with 30 PIM in 36 games with Providence College of the NCAA last season.

Flinn, a fifth round pick (143rd overall) of the New Jersey Devils in 1998, scored 2-4-6 with 166 PIM in 61 games with San Antonio of the AHL last season.  He has also played a total of 31 NHL games, scoring 1-0-1 with 84 PIM.

Kemp, who was never drafted, scored 5-33-38 with 56 PIM in 65 games with Manchester of the AHL last year.  Reynolds, who also went undrafted, scored 0-1-1 with 93 PIM in 42 games with Milwaukee of the AHL last season.

Oilers sign unrestricted free agent defenceman Sheldon Souray to a five-year, $27 million contract.  The deal will pay him $6.5 million in each of the first two years, $5 million in year three and $4.5 million in the fourth and fifth years.  It also includes a no movement clause for the first three years.

Souray was the third-highest scoring defenceman in the NHL last year with 28-36-64 and 135 PIM in 81 games.  He set an NHL record with 19 power play goals.  In 506 career NHL games, he has scored 66-120-186 with 821 PIM.

July 5: Oilers obtain defenceman Allan Rourke and a 2008 third round draft pick from the New York Islanders in exchange for a 2008 second round pick.  Rourke, a journeyman AHL player, has played just 42 NHL games over the past 10 seasons, scoring 1-4-5 with 26 PIM.

The third round pick that the Oilers acquired in the trade is the pick that the team originally traded to the Islanders along with Marc-Andre Bergeron at the trade deadline last year.  This could be significant because the Oilers will need to use their own draft picks as compensation of they intend to try to sign a restricted free agent from another team to an offer sheet.  The offer sheet compensation is as follows:
.

Contract Amount Compensation
$773,442 or below None
$773,442 - $1,171,882 Third-round pick
$1,171,882 - $2,343,765 Second-round pick

July 3:

July 1:
Oilers obtain defenceman Joni Pitkanen, left winger Geoff Sanderson and a 2009 third round draft pick from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defenceman Jason Smith and right winger Joffrey Lupul.
