OILERS
OFFICIALLY ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFF RACE
Mar.
20, 2007
A 2-1 win by the Calgary
Flames over the Detroit Red Wings has officially eliminated the Edmonton
Oilers from playoff contention. With only 9 games remaining this
season, the Oilers cannot gain enough points to catch the eighth-place
Flames. This marks the seventh time in franchise history that the
team has failed to qualify for the post-season, and the third time in the
past five NHL seasons that they haven't made the playoffs.
The seasons that the Oilers
have missed the playoffs are:
1992-1993
1993-1994
1994-1995
1995-1996
2001-2002
2003-2004
2006-2007
A full list of the Oilers
annual records can be found here.
NEW
AHL AFFILIATE FOR OILERS
Mar.
19, 2007
Oilers
announce that they have signed a new three-year affiliation agreement with
the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League. This will
allow the Oilers to have their own AHL affiliate for the first time since
2004-05, when the franchise folded the Edmonton Road Runners.
This
season, the Oilers have farmed players out to a number of AHL teams, including
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Iowa, Hamilton and Grand Rapids. These AHL
teams have been coached by the other franchises, however, leaving the Oilers
with little control over the development of their own players. |

MIKHNOV
RETURNS TO RUSSIA
Jan.
24, 2007
| Minor
league right winger Alexei
Mikhnov has been transferred from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
of the AHL to Yaroslavl of the Russian Elite League. Mikhnov, a first
round (17th overall) pick of the Oilers back in 1999, had scored 6-12-19
in 27 games in the AHL this year, but was expected to challenge for an
NHL roster spot. He played just two games with the Oilers, going
pointless. It is expected that Mikhnov will be invited back to the
Oilers training camp next fall, but the jury is out as to whether or not
he will report. At this point, he looks a lot like another in a long
series of first round busts the Oilers have drafted. |
