12, 2005:
| Former
Oilers' great Mark
Messier announced his retirement today, bringing to an end his illustrious
25 year NHL career. There had been speculation that Messier might
return to play one more season, and Oilers' General Manager Kevin Lowe
was actively pursuing him to end his career as an Oiler. Messier
retires after winning six Stanley Cups and scoring 694-1193-1887 in 1,756
career games. The New York Rangers will retire his jersey on Jan.
12 in a game against Edmonton, and the Oilers will no doubt follow suit
and have a retirement ceremony of their own early next season. |

Center Shawn
Horcoff is one of only 11 NHL players to file for salary arbitration.
A hearing date will be scheduled, and his salary for next season will be
determined by an arbitrator if he and the Oilers are unable to come to
a deal beforehand.
This move means that Horcoff
is unable to sign an offer sheet with any other team. |
