Number to be retired

Nov. 28, 2005:

Morrison
Goaltender Michael Morrison is named the NHL Defensive Player of the Week.  Morrison was 3-0 and recorded a 1.58 goals-against average and .933 save percentage last week. He made 21 saves in a 2-1 shootout victory against the San Jose Sharks last Monday. He then stopped 25 shots in a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday before capping the week with 27 saves in a 2-1 shootout victory at Calgary on Friday.

Sept. 12, 2005:

Former Oilers' great Mark Messier announced his retirement today, bringing to an end his illustrious 25 year NHL career.  There had been speculation that Messier might return to play one more season, and Oilers' General Manager Kevin Lowe was actively pursuing him to end his career as an Oiler.  Messier retires after winning six Stanley Cups and scoring 694-1193-1887 in 1,756 career games.  The New York Rangers will retire his jersey on Jan. 12 in a game against Edmonton, and the Oilers will no doubt follow suit and have a retirement ceremony of their own early next season.

Sept. 7, 2005:

Markkanen
Oilers' goaltender Jussi Markkanen will miss the team's training camp and most or all of their pre-season games after fracturing his left collarbone during a game in Finland Aug. 30.  Markkanen has returned to Edmonton to be examined by team doctors.

Markkanen's injury opens the door for rookies Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers or Michael Morrison to earn a spot as the Oilers' backup netminder to start the season.

Aug. 17, 2005:

Oilers announce that the team will retire Paul Coffey's #7 during a ceremony before the Oct. 18 regular season game against the Phoenix Coyotes.  Coyotes' coach Wayne Gretzky will be on hand during the ceremony.

Coffey joins Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr and Al Hamilton as the only Oilers to have their numbers retired.  Coffey is the 10th highest scorer in NHL history, scoring 396 goals and 1,135 assists for 1,531 points in 1,409 regular season games.

Aug. 15, 2005:

A salary arbitration hearing between the Oilers and center Shawn Horcoff is scheduled for Aug. 25.  The two sides are still free to negotiate a deal prior to the hearing.

Aug. 10, 2005:

Horcoff
Center Shawn Horcoff is one of only 11 NHL players to file for salary arbitration.  A hearing date will be scheduled, and his salary for next season will be determined by an arbitrator if he and the Oilers are unable to come to a deal beforehand.

This move means that Horcoff is unable to sign an offer sheet with any other team.

Aug. 10, 2005:

Oilers announce a new affiliation agreement with the American Hockey Leagues Iowa Stars for the 2005-06 season.  The Oilers are expecting to assign up to seven players to Iowa, the Dallas Stars' farm team, for the upcoming season.  The Oilers also have affiliation agreements with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs (Montreal) and the ECHL Greenville Grrrowl.
