News & Notes (April 2004 to July 2004)

July 23:

Oilers announce that their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Roadrunners, will relocate to Edmonton for the 2004-05 season.  The team will play out of Rexall Place, and the AHL schedule will be altered so that no scheduling conflicts occur between AHL and NHL games.  The move became necessary after efforts to secure a home arena in Toronto were unsuccessful.

The Oilers' brass are suggesting that the relocation is a permanent move, but with the exception of the Edmonton Trappers, teams other than the Oilers and Eskimos have been notorious for folding due to lack of fan support.  The jury is out as to whether the Edmonton market can support two professional hockey teams.

May 31:

The Denver Post has reported that former Oilers goaltender Tommy Salo has decided to retire from the NHL.  Salo, who was traded to the Colorado Avalanche March 9, will play in Sweden next season.

Oilers' center Adam Oates has indicated that he will officially retire this summer.  Oates, 41, was signed last November to shore up the center ice position.  He was very successful in the faceoff circle, but only scored 2-16-18 in 60 games and failed to inject some life into the team's powerplay as hoped.  Oates scored 341-1079-1420 in 1337 career NHL games.

April 3:

A 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks officially eliminates the Oilers from Stanley Cup Playoff contention.  This is the second time in the past three seasons that the Oilers have failed to qualify for the post-season.
