The Oilers return to the playoffs after a one-year absence. The team

announce that Defenceman Steve
Staios has been selected as the team's nominee for the 2002-03 Bill
Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is given to the player "who best
exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication
to hockey."
The
Masterton Trophy was first presented by the NHL Writers' Association in
1968 to commemorate the late Bill Masterton, a player with the Minnesota
North Stars, who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance,
sportsmanship and dedication to hockey, and who died January 15, 1968. |

Laraque will undergo surgery to repair cartilage damage
in his right knee. Laraque has missed the Oilers last two games due to
the injury. The Oilers are waiting until after the surgery to determine
how much longer Laraque will be sidelined. |

YoungStars Game in Sunrise, Florida. The game is part of NHL All-Star
Weekend and showcases players age 25 and under who are playing on entry-level
contracts. Hemsky is the second Oiler to be named to the YoungStars
Game, joining Mike Comrie, who skated in the inaugural game in 2001-02
at Los Angeles. |
