Sept. 28 Oilers enter into a one-year affiliation agreement with the Odessa Jackalopes of the Central Hockey League.  Both the Oilers and Hamilton Bulldogs can assign and recall players, which is a similar arrangement as the teams have with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the East Coast league.
Sept. 26 Oilers conduct another round of training camp cuts.

Sept. 7 Oilers invite four veteran AHL players for training camp tryouts, including former Bulldogs right-winger Kevin Brown, defenceman Ryan Bast, goaltender Jeff Salajko and former Hamillton netminder Eric Heffler.

Aug. 30 Oilers announce the retirement of 24-year-old center PAUL COMRIE.  Comrie suffered a concussion after being elbowed during a game in Hamilton Jan. 7, 2000.  He continues to experience exercise-induced post concussion syndrome
Aug. 29 Oilers sign defenceman ELIAS ABRAHAMSSON to an undisclosed contract.  Abrahamsson scored 2-2-4 with 54 PIM in 39 games with the Providence Bruins last season.  He played for Hamilton during the 1999-2000 season. 
Aug. 17 Oilers name Geoff Ward assistant coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Aug. 16 Oilers sign unrestricted free agent left winger SEAN SELMSER to an undisclosed one-year contract.  Selmser played last season for the Columbus Blue Jackets' organization.  He was scoreless in the one NHL game he played, but added 11-15-26 in 75 games with the AHL Syracuse Crunch.  This is Selmser's second tour of duty with the Oilers' organization.  He played the 1999-2000 season with Hamilton.
Aug. 15 Oilers re-sign defenceman ERIC BREWER to a one-year, $907,500 contract.  Brewer scored 7-14-21 in 77 regular games last year, and added 1-5-6 in six playofff games.
Aug. 14 Unrestricted free agent defenceman RORY FITZPATRICK signs an undisclosed contract with the Buffalo Sabres.  Fitzpatrick did not play a game with Edmonton last year, but scored 3-17-20 with 29 PIM in 34 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Aug. 9 Oilers sign goaltender MARC LAMOTHE and left-winger JARED SMYTH to undisclosed contracts.

Lamothe played last season for the AHL Syracuse Crunch, compiling a 17-15-7 record with a 2.89 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 42 games.

Smyth, who is the the younger brother of the Oilers' Ryan Smyth, was scoreless in two games with Hamilton last year, but added 6-71-23 in 67 games with the ECHL Tallahassee Tiger Sharks. 

Aug. 9 Oilers re-sign unrestricted free agent defenceman ALAIN NASREDDINE to a one-year contract.  Nasreddine has not played a game for Edmonton since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in March of 2000.  He scored 4-14-18 with 164 PIM in 74 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs last season.
Aug. 9 Goaltender JOAQUIN GAGE signs an undisclosed contract with the Scottish Eagles of the British Ice Hockey Superleague.  Gage, who became an unrestricted free agent after the Oilers chose not to exercise his contract option, posted a 2-2 record with a 3.46 GAA in five games with Edmonton last season.  He also played 37 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs, going 12-22-2 with a 3.33 GAA.
Aug. 7 Oilers re-sign center BRIAN SWANSON to a two-year contract.  Swanson played 16 games with Edmonton last year, scoring 1-1-2 with 6 PIM.  He added 18-29-47 in 49 games with Hamilton.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Aug. 3 Oilers re-sign defenceman JANNE NIINIMAA to a three-year contract worth a reported $8.5 million.  Niinimaa led the Oilers' defencemen in scoring last season with 12-33-45 in 82 games, and added 0-2-2 in six playoff games. Niinimaa will earn $2.7 million next year and $2.9 million in each of the following two seasons.
Aug. 2 Unrestricted free agent defenceman TERRAN SANDWITH signs an undisclosed contract with the Belfast Giants of the British Ice Hockey Superleague.  Sandwith did not play a game with Edmonton last year, but scored 1-12-13 with 154 PIM in 59 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Aug. 1 Oilers sign center MARTY REASONER to a two-year, $1.5 million contract.  Reasoner, who was acquired from St. Louis in the Doug Weight trade, scored 4-9-13 in 41 regular season games for the Blues last season.
Aug. 1 Oilers re-sign unrestricted free agent defenceman SVEN BUTENSCHON to a one-year contract.  Butenschon scored 1-1-2 in 7 games with the Oilers last season.

July 31 Oilers re-sign left winger DAN CLEARY to a three-year, $2.7 million contract.  Cleary scored 14-20-34 in 81 regular season games last year, and added 1-1-2 in 6 playoff games.  The new deal will pay Cleary $750,000, $850,000 and $1.1 million over the next three seasons 
July 31 Oilers re-sign left-winger JOSH GREEN to a one-year, $726,000 contract.  Green was limited to playing in just three playoff games last year after separate surgeries on each of his shoulders.
July 31 Oilers re-sign defenceman CHRIS HAJT to an undisclosed one-year contract.  Hajt played only one game for Edmonton last season.  He has played most of the last three years with the Hamilton Bulldogs, scoring 0-10-10 in 70 games last season.
July 30 Oilers sign center JOCHEN HECHT to a three-year, $3.2 million contract.  The signing comes after Hecht had signed a deal to play for the Mannheim Eagles in the German Elite League, but that contract had an out clause if he reached an agreement with the Oilers.  Hecht, who was acquired from St. Louis in the Doug Weight trade, signed for $825,000 this season, $1.075 million for the second year and $1.3 million for the final season. 
July 27 Unrestricted free agent defenceman BRAD NORTON signs an undisclosed contract with the Florida Panthers.  Norton scored 3-15-18 in 46 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs last season.  He did not play a game with Edmonton.
July 24 Unrestricted free agent left winger PAUL HEALEY signs an undisclosed contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Healey did not play a game with Edmonton last year, but was the leading scorer with the Hamilton Bulldogs with 39-32-71 in 79 games.
July 16 Oilers sign free agent centers JAN BENDA and GREG LEEB to one-year contracts.

Benda, 29, scored 18-26-44 with 56 PIM in 52 games with in Jokerit of the Finnish elite league last season.  His only NHL action was during the 1997-98 season, when he scored 0-3-3 in nine games with the Washington Capitals.

Leeb, 24, scored 25-40-65 with 36 PIM in 78 games with the Utah Grizzlies of the International Hockey League last year.  He also played a pair of games for the Dallas Stars in which he was held pointless.

July 15 Defenceman JANNE NIINIMAA files for salary arbitration.  If Niinimaa, who made $1.81 million last season, is unable to come to terms with the Oilers an NHL arbitrator will accept submissions by both the team and the player and will award a new one-year contract based on the winning proposal.  Niinimaa is now unable to sign an offer sheet with another NHL team.
July 15 Oilers come to terms with three European prospects.

Russian defenceman ALEXANDER LJUBIMOV signed a three-year deal.  Ljubimov, 26, was selected by the Oilers in the third round, 83rd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.  He played last season with Lada Togliatti, scoring 1-1-2 with 8 PIM in 24 games.

Finnish defenceman KARI HAAKANA has agreed to a one-year deal.  The 27-year-old rearguard was selected by Edmonton in the eighth round, 248th overall, in this year's NHL Entry Draft.  He played last season with from Jokerit, scoring 2-8-10 with 98 PIM in 58 games.

Goaltender JUSSI MARKKANEN also signed a one-year contract.  Markkanen, 26, was selected by the Oilers in the fifth round, 133rd overall, in this year's NHL Entry Draft.  He played last season for Tappara Tampere, compiling a 2.09 GAA and .923 save percentage in 52 games. He is expected  to compete for a job as Tommy Salo's backup this season. 

July 14 Oilers sign left winger JANI RITA to a three-year contract.  Rita, 19, was the Oilers' first-round choice, 13th overall, in the 1999  NHL Entry draft.  He led the World Junior Hockey Championships in scoring last year with eight goals and an assist.
July 13 Oiler come to terms with defenceman ALES PISA on a one-year, two-way contract.  Pisa, 24, played last seaspon for Pardubice in the Czech league.  He was drafted in the ninth round, 272nd overall, in this year's draft.
July 12 Oilers sign unrestricted free agent defenceman STEVE STAIOS to to a three-year contract.  Staios scored 9-13-22 in 70 games with the Altlanta Thrashers last season.  Staios, the Thrashers' captain, became an unrestricted free agent after the team elected not to tender him a qualifying offer.  He has signed for $850,000 next season and $900,000 in 2002-03. The final year has a two-sided option: $1.1 million if the Oilers exercise it, $950,000 if Staios does.
July 2 Unrestricted free agent defenceman BRETT HAUER signs a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Kings.  Financial terms were not disclosed.  Hauer played all of last season with the Manitoba Moose of the IHL.
July 1 Unrestricted free agent defenceman IGOR ULANOV signs a three-year contract with the New York Rangers reported to be worth $6 million. Ulanov scored 3-20-23 with 90 PIM in 67 games with Edmonton last season.
July 1 Oilers fans got another painful reminder at how difficult a time this team will have completing in today's NHL market.  Center DOUG WEIGHT and right winger MICHEL RIESEN are traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for centers JOCHEN HECHT and MARTY REASONER and defenceman JAN HORACEK.  Weight, who would have become an unrestricted free agent after this season, then signed a five-year deal with St. Louis worth a reported $40 million.

Weight, the Oilers' captain, led the team in scoring last season with 25-65-90 in 82 games.  Riesen played 12 games with Edmonton last year, scoring 0-1-1. 

Hecht, 24, scored 19-25-44 in 72 games with the Blues last season, adding 2-4-6 in 15 playoff games.  His regular season NHL totals are:

June 29: Oilers exercise a one-year contract option for defenceman SEAN BROWN that will see him earn $625,000 for the upcoming season.  Brown scored 2-3-5 with 110 PIM in 62 games with Edmonton last season.
June 29: Oilers trade center SERGEI ZHOLTOK to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for future considerations involving draft picks.  Zholtok scored 4-16-20 in 37 games with Edmonton last season after being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Chad Kilger. 
June 24: Oilers make their selections in rounds three through nine of the NHL Entry Draft.  The players selected were:

June 23: Oilers select Czech right winger ALES HEMSKY in the first round, 13th overall, of the NHL entry draft.  Hemsky, 6-0, 170-pounds, played for the Hull Olympiques of the QMJHL, scoring 36-64-100 in 68 games.

June 12: Oilers sign left wing FERNANDO PISANI to an undisclosed contract. Pisani, who was drafted by the Oilers 195th overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, scored 12-13-25 in 52 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs last season.
June 6: After failing to come to a contract agreement with the Oilers, defenceman CHRISTIAN CHARTIER signs an undisclosed contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
June 2: Oilers' prospect CHRISTIAN CHARTIER becomes an unrestricted free agent after the team was unable to sign him to a contract.  The 20-year-old defenceman scored 12-56-68 with Prince George of the WHL last season.  He was drafted 199th overall by the Oilers in 1999.

The Oilers also decided not to extend a contract offers to defenceman JONATHON FAUTEUX (drafted 139th overall in 1999) and left winger TOMAS GROSCHL (drafted 256th overall in 1999).  Both players also become free agents.
