| May. 31: | Oilers sign junior center JASON CHIMERA to a three year contract and center CHAD HINZ to an undisclosed contract. Chimera, who was picked in the fifth round (121st overall) in the 1997 draft, scored 32 goals and 34 assists with the Brandon Wheat Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL last season. Hinz, a seventh round (187th overall) pick in 1997, had 42 goals and 75 for the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors. Both players are expected to compete for jobs in Hamilton next season. |
| May 11: | Oilers signed goaltender ERIC HEFFLER to a two-year contract. Heffler played last year with St. Lawrence University in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and was named Player of the Year and won the Dryden Award as the top goalie in the conference. He registered a 2.50 goals against average and a .939 save percentage in a pair of try-out games with the Hamilton Bulldogs this year. |

The Oilers then traded defenceman BORIS MIRONOV, left winger DEAN McAMMOND and defensive prospect JONAS ELOFSSON to the Chicago Blackhawks for center CHAD KILGER, left wingers ETHAN MOREAU and DANIEL CLEARY and defenseman CHRISTIAN LAFLAMME. Statistics for the newcomers are as follows: Kilger: 14-11-25 in 64 games; Moreau: 9-6-15 in 66 games; Cleary 4-5-9 in 35 games; Laflamme: 2-11-13 in 62 games. |
